Whether you are new to the L&N STEM Academy or you've been a Gryphon for a while, you may be looking for our reference documents.
This page serves as a central hub for students and families to easily access information for navigating the school and its daily operations, including enrollment, student handbooks, and bell schedules.
Enrollment & Transfers
The L&N STEM Academy is a magnet high school with no geographical zone. Students must request a spot at the L&N STEM Academy through the Knox County School transfer process.
Daily Schedule
At The L&N STEM Academy, the school day begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. on regular school days.
On Mondays, the day begins at 9:30 AM, and dismissal is at 3:30 PM. Buses still run at 4:30 PM on Mondays. If students are on campus between 3:30-4:30, they will be in a quiet Study Hall during that time.
Students must attend for at least 3.5 hours to be counted present for the day.
Academics
The L&N STEM Academy offers a highly rigorous curriculum, with students taking 8 year-long classes simultaneously. Students interested in attending the L&N STEM Academy should be intrinsically motivated and ready for an academic challenge.
Ninth-grade students learn essential skills needed for success in high school through our Freshman Advisories, building a strong foundation for high school success.
In 10th grade, students join one of our four schools:
- The School of Computational Science & Cybersecurity;
- The School of Physics, Mechanics & Engineering;
- The School of Advanced Inquiry & Research, or
- The School of Design Thinking.
They'll take classes in their chosen school through graduation, ensuring their learning is connected to real-world skills and future opportunities. See more about this below:
Student Supports
Our professional school counselors are certified/licensed educators with a master's degree or higher in school counseling, making them uniquely qualified to address the developmental needs of all students. School Counselors address students' academic, career, and social/emotional needs by designing, implementing, evaluating and enhancing a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and helps maximize student success.
The Counseling Office is open daily for students to stop by and talk to their counselor to discuss their academic plan, connect with scholarship and financial aid, address any social/emotional concerns, and much more. Parents and students are welcome to contact their student's counselor to make an appointment!
Library / Media Center
Our library is a hub for student learning, reading, discovery, and collaboration. In addition to the school library, the library space is a great space for students to connect and foster their love of reading.
